Hello people, I'm an indie game dev and artist.

I'm wondering if it is possible to make whole animation movies with Spine, if it's a viable way of movie production at all.
I'm very new to Spine 2D, and am still not decided whether or not I should buy the full version. I would be very grateful if you could help me.

Also, a side question: Is there any downside to using Spine that I should be aware of?

Spine was designed for use in game engines. Apart from having to do steps that aren't needed in videos, I think you'd be missing out on a lot of handy features that programs specifically designed for videos have. Like framing, and audio and various effects, etc...

Those may come to Spine in the future but that would be a long wait if you want to do things now.

I believe you could potentially create an animated movie using Spine as the underlying character animation tool. To make a scene with a background and multiple characters interacting, you would almost certainly have to composite exported assets from Spine into another application such as AfterEffects, or maybe ToonBoom. I am very new to Spine, but personally, I would seek other options for movie making.

I've read questions about Spine for making movies from this forum about 3.5 years ago. I was wondering if anything has changed?
I am new to animation and Spine. Has Spine gotten any better for making movies....Ie? adding frames etc.?

Compared to 3.5 years ago, Spine made some huge additions!

We now have audio integrated in the editor as well as in the export (and better export in general!)
Audio Events - Spine User Guide
Export - Spine User Guide

There's even a lip-sync plugin:
Mouth animation using Rhubarb Lip Sync

Precise clipping placement as well as the export settings help define the camera view better:

Music videos and lip sync to music:

Animated series:

"Always the Boss" web series.

So it's definitely more versatile and viable now!

Sorry to interrupt. This post remind me a reported bug a month ago. Do you know if it is fixed already?

Export MOV stuck at 12%

Once this bug occurs on a project, no video format can be exported correctly.
Sometimes not even APNG format. (Was painfully exporting frame by frame to work around for a forgotten project.)

Hi Nick, I still could reproduce the bug and opened an issue that links to the thread you posted. Sorry for the trouble!
